Medium Dog Breeds

For those who don't care for smaller dogs but don't have the time, space or desire for a larger dog, medium-sized dogs may be just right. Not too small and not too big, medium dogs make great family dogs. Many of the medium dog breeds can do quite well with limited space. One or two daily walks and they will be content and well-behaved.

While a larger dog may be out of the question, smaller dog breeds may not be right for everyone. Small dogs can get out of control for someone without a strong personality. Small dogs tend to get by with behaviors that larger or medium dog breeds do not. When a Yorkie jumps up on people, some may see this as being "cute." If a Dachshund snarls and growls at a guest, the owner may tend to just laugh it off. If a toy poodle hops up on the sofa without being invited, the owner may consider it to be a sign of complete loyalty and affection. These behaviors are in fact a dog's way of being dominate and trying to "own the owner." These dogs can get out of control and become jealous, possessive and aggressive. It's known as "small dog syndrome."

Medium dog breeds tend to be loyal, friendly and easily trained. The folowing are some favorite medium dog breeds.

The English Bulldog is one of the mellowest dog breeds of all. Comical and jovial, they are great around children and other pets. They stand 12-15 inches tall and weigh between 40 and 50 pounds.

The Australian Sheppard is loving, alert, confident and independent. Reserved with strangers, it has a protective nature. They are between 18-23 inches tall and weigh from 40-65 pounds. Males are bigger than females.

Graceful and lithe in movement, the Irish Terrier is known as the "Daredevil of Dogdom." When given enough daily physical and mental exercise, it is surprisingly well-behaved indoors. They stand about 18 inches tall and weigh between 25 and 27 pounds.

The American Eskimo Dog can be a toy, small or Standard breed. The Standard American Eskimo stands between 15 and 19 inches and weighs about 40 pounds. With their thick, beautiful white coat, they have become a favorite dog breed.

With its strong herding instinct, The Border Collie has the reputation of being the most intelligent dog breed. They stand between 19 and 28 inches tall and weigh between 27 and 45 pounds.
